Many Embassies in VietNam are either not authorised or simply will not perform marriage
ceremonies. |

On 2003 JAN 02 the Vietnamese Government introduced new legislation to facilitate the
marriage between two foreign parties resident in Vietnam. |
|
You are advised to contact the Justice Department at provincial level in your place of
residence about the necessary procedures to be followed. |
|
Please note that a Civil Vietnamese Marriage certificate will be recognised by the most
authorities for administrative purposes if it is valid under Vietnamese Law. You may wish to seek independent legal
advice. |

New legislation |

The new law states that you will need to produce the following documents: |

(1) |
A completed application form for registering a marriage Certificate of No Impediment (CNI)
or a letter from the Embassies concerned certifying that you are not married; if applicable a Divorce Decree Absolute
or Death Certificate of your former spouse. |

A formal medical certificate not more than 6 months old stating that you are not mentally
ill, if however you do have a mental illness you will be required to submit a medical certificate stating that you are
fully aware of your actions. |

(4) |
A formal medical certificate not more than 6 months old stating that you are not infected
with HIV/AIDS. This test is available locally at minimal cost. |

(5) |
A certified copy of your passport |
|
(6) |
Your Vietnamese Resident Permit (NOT Tourist visa). |

(7) |
Your personal CV (standard format available locally) |

Marriage ceremonies are civil, and involve a waiting period of 30 after applying for
permission to marry. |
|
The whole process is distinctly unromantic, more resembling an unemployment line up or a
queue to pay taxes. |
|
Marrying a Vietnamese citizen is identical to the foregoing except that they produce their
Identity Card. |
|
The Marriage Office in Ho Chi Minh City is located at 123 Pasteur Street. |
|
Duplicate marriage certificates are ready available for a small fee. |
