 Marriage in VietNam
Many Embassies in VietNam are either not authorised or simply will not perform marriage ceremonies.
On 2003 JAN 02 the Vietnamese Government introduced new legislation to facilitate the marriage between two foreign parties resident in Vietnam.
You are advised to contact the Justice Department at provincial level in your place of residence about the necessary procedures to be followed.
Please note that a Civil Vietnamese Marriage certificate will be recognised by the most authorities for administrative purposes if it is valid under Vietnamese Law. You may wish to seek independent legal advice.
WomPom.ca cannot accept any legal responsibility for the advice below, which is intended as a guide.
New legislation
The new law states that you will need to produce the following documents:
(1) A completed application form for registering a marriage Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) or a letter from the Embassies concerned certifying that you are not married; if applicable a Divorce Decree Absolute or Death Certificate of your former spouse.
(2) Click here for details of applying for a CNI.
(3) A formal medical certificate not more than 6 months old stating that you are not mentally ill, if however you do have a mental illness you will be required to submit a medical certificate stating that you are fully aware of your actions.
(4) A formal medical certificate not more than 6 months old stating that you are not infected with HIV/AIDS. This test is available locally at minimal cost.
(5) A certified copy of your passport
(6) Your Vietnamese Resident Permit (NOT Tourist visa).
(7) Your personal CV (standard format available locally)
Marriage ceremonies are civil, and involve a waiting period of 30 after applying for permission to marry.
The whole process is distinctly unromantic, more resembling an unemployment line up or a queue to pay taxes.
Marrying a Vietnamese citizen is identical to the foregoing except that they produce their Identity Card.
The Marriage Office in Ho Chi Minh City is located at 123 Pasteur Street.
Duplicate marriage certificates are ready available for a small fee.
