Description:
Son La Province, the fifth largest in ViętNam, is located in the northwestern region of ViętNam. The province is bordered on the north by Lao Cai and Yen Bai, Laos and Thanh Hoa to the south, Hoa Binh to the east and Lai Chau to the west.

Economy:
Agriculture, forestry.

Natural beauty sights:
Eighty percent of the province’s natural area is covered with mountains.

Tourist sights:
Tham Tet Tong is a complex of marvelous grottoes located only 1.5 kilometres from Son La. Excursions to Tay Bac Mountains and bathing at Ban Mong Hot Springs are available. Visits to ethnic minorities hamlets are also popular.

Museum:
Son La Provincial Museum.

Festivals:
Hoa Ban Festival, New Rice Festival.

Markets:
Son La Market for colourful women’s shoulder bags, scarves and other Montagnard crafts. Thuan Chau Market in an attractive market town 35 kilometres northwest of Son La, a good place to buy head scarves.

Transport:
Son La has both air and road links being 310 kilometres northwest of Ha Noi, 121 kilometres from Moc Chau and  170 kilometres from Mai Chau. Moc Chau is 199 kilometres from Ha Noi.

Transport - Air
Na San Airport (SQH) is 20 kilometres from Son La. Flights only run once a week. A ticket can be booked at Son La Hotel.

Transport - Road
Bus connections with Ha Noi’s Kim Ma station. Car rentals can be arranged in Son La for about USD$120 for a Son La-Ha Noi round trip. You should remember you are responsible for feeding and housing drivers on overnight journeys.
