Money & credit cards in VietNam
VietNam is a primarily a cash based society although with an ever increasing number of Travellers, Vi那tNam joining the international community and increasing international trade, credit cards are becoming more acceptable.
The Vietnamese currency is denominated as the Ðong (pronounced dom) is in paper and, now, coins.
In the recent past, many hotels and restaurants demanded payment in US dollars and would not accept Vietnamese currency. In 1994, the Vietnamese government banned this practice - all businesses in Vi那tNam must officially now advertise and accept payment in Ðong only. In reality, many places still quote prices in dollar and will 'exchange' (convert) on the spot.
Departure taxes may be paid in either Ðong or US dollars - change will be returned in US dollars.
 Money - the banknotes
The banknotes come in denominations of Ð200, Ð500, Ðl,000, Ð2,000, Ð5,000, Ðl0,000, Ð20,000, Ð50,000 and Ð100,000.
Internationally the currency is coded as VND but is not traded as it is not lawful to remove the currency from Vi那tNam.  ;^)
There are also Ð50 banknotes but these were printed as a special celebratory issue and are for all practical purposes of no use in day-to-day life.
Especial care should be exercised when using Ð5,000 and Ð20,000 as they are both blue in colour.
The banknotes are reproduced here. (Slow load!)
VietNam uses Polymer Notes to beat counterfeiters
The State Bank of VietNam governor LE Duc Thuy said the new notes would be issued with effect from 2004SEP01 though existing VND100,000 notes - the denomination most faked - would also continue to be used.
The Central Bank has decided to stop printing the cotton paper-based notes and expects them to be completely replaced by the polymer banknotes within one year, he said.
The new notes will contain 16 special security features, including one for people with visual disability, he added.
 Money - the coins
Commencing in 2003 DEC the Central Bank of VietNam issued Dong 1,000 and D5,000 coins followed by Dong200 and Dong2,000 on 2004 APR 01.
There is great resistance on the part of Vietnamese vendors and shop keepers to accept coins - they could be used to make interesting key fobs, however.
Paper money continues in circulation until it is worn to a point where it cannot be used.
