Tour Ratings
or How Fit Are You?

The are many tours and treks with varying amounts of physical demand.
To assist Travellers in assessing the rigours of various treks and climbs and deciding whether they are sufficiently fit to undertake various challenges, a semi-official rating system has been adopted by many Tour Operators in Indochina.
Read a prospective tour brochure in conjunction with the following:

Rigour Rating 1
Typically includes city and cultural sightseeing, jungle visits, boat cruises and beach breaks. No strenuous activity required  and are non-trekking but may involve limited walking.

Rigour Rating 2
Includes tours that have an element non-strenuous walking, canoeing or cycling involved and are not difficult. The activities are an ancillary part of the tour rather than the sole focus of the tour.

Rigour Rating 3
Such tours are rated as walking tours, with trails at lower altitudes with the walks of reasonably short in duration, often with optional rest days.
Temperatures also affect the level of difficulty. Any fit person would enjoy the walks; the walks are not on level ground and will involve some climbs and descents.
Walking may last between 4 and 5 hours per day.

Rigour Rating 4
Such rated tours are treks or walking tours, and involve 5 to 7 hours of walking each day.
Participants should be in good health, fit and take regular exercise.
Such treks likely involve walking at higher altitudes with longer duration and more difficult days.

Rigour Rating 5
These are tough treks; exertion at altitude is the norm, with usually 6 to 8 hours of walking a day. Participants must be in good shape, most who join this type of tour do significant physical preparation.
These tours often include a longer, more demanding ‘summit’ day. Adverse conditions may occasionally be experienced but are very rewarding.

Rigour Rating 6
Simply put, these are tough expeditions and all participants must be physically and mentally prepared for exertion at very high altitudes and in extreme weather conditions.
Technical equipment includes the use of ice axes and crampons, it is highly recommended that a Rigour Rating 4 or 5 trek has been completed, prior to being accepted on a Rigour Rating 6 trek.
