  Banh Cuon
17 Cha Ca Street, Ha Noi
Banh Cuon – noodles with meat inside – 17 Cha Ca Street (I do not know the name of this very local restaurant).
The Banh Cuon was very delicious. Make sure you tell them you want Banh Cuon it is on the menu board on the wall and is DONG5,000.
If you don’t they will give you Banh Cuon and tea and charge you 9,000 (This is on another board with an English explanation). We ordered Banh Cuon from the father and it was delicious.
His 4 daughters were not sure what to do when I stood up to pay and the father was not around. They talked among themselves and finally one of them stated ‘DONG14,000.’
I pointed at the sign gave them DONG10,000 and we were off sightseeing. I know the money is not material but it was fun to not pay Foreigner prices!!!

Baguette and Chocolat
11 Cha Ca Street, Hoan Kiem District, Ha Noi
The best chocolate deserts and hot chocolate. Great on a cold day. Started by ex teachers who now use the restaurant to train the kids in hospitality trades.

Baquette and Chocolate
11 Cha Ca Street
This bakery is a training school. I recommend visiting for coffee and pastries.
They do also serve meals here and I would recommend going for lunch.
We went for dinner and they were out of most of the food on the menu. Back to the pastry and coffee, both were excellent. Also the interior, especially upstairs is wonderful.
  Try to go!

Bar Red Mask
2D Ta Hien Street, Old Quarter, Ha Noi
Very friendly staff, fine selection of music, and a nice crowd gathers there to negotiate a pool table and darts.

Binh Dan (ordinary people's)
corner of Bat Dan and Hang Ga, Old Quarter, Ha Noi
My personal favourite is a no-name 'binh dan' (ordinary people's) on the corner of Bat Dan and Hang Ga in the old quarter.
Looks awful, but fabulous food. Go up the narrow stairs at the back of the kitchen to a lovely little mezzanine balcony. Rock-salt and chilli baked crabs are the best I've had in VietNam (and I've had a few).

Bobby Chin's
1 Ba Trieu Street, Ha Noi
For VietNam it is expensive, but it is extremely tasty chow with superb service, a wine list unheard of in VietNam, ambience and food that is heads and tails above the usual fare found even in the major Vietnamese cities.
  Worth the splurge.

Brother’s Café
26 Nguyen Thai Hoc
We went for the lunch buffet which is USD$5.50 per person.
The restaurant is beautiful in a wonderful courtyard. The food was also excellent. We would highly recommend a leisurely lunch or dinner here.

Cha Ca La Vong is really a very special one that I have once tasted and it is unforgettable. Try one time when visiting Vietnam; do not miss these special dishes.

This restaurant serves only one thing which is Cha Ca – whitefish fried table side in oil and accompanied by dill, scallions, peanuts, cilantro, Chile sauce and vermicelli.
This restaurant is an institution that has been run by the same family for over 100 years. The cost is DONG60,000 per person.
We did not like the sauce that the fish is cooked in and thus can not recommend. However, you might want to give it a try as you might like it.

Cha Cha Go to the bakery/cafe across the street from Cha Cha La Vong fish restaraunt,
A hang out for Travellers. The staff is really nice to, plus the food is good. The upstairs lounge has magazines, etc. for Travellers to read.

Ha Noi Garden
36 Hang Manh, Ha Noi
The grilled duck was excellent. The rest of the food was very mediocre. All and all I would say this dinner was not worth the USD$20 cost.

Highway 4
5 Hang Tre Street, Hoam Kiem District, Old Quarter.
It has three floors. The bar is downstairs (I ate there also).
Go upstairs - it's very cool with a 12 page menu. You can't go wrong here.
The place is very, very busy with locals.

Hoa Sua Restaurant
81 Nhyam Street, Ha Noi
Same organisation as Baquette and Chocolate.
Great atmosphere at this restaurant. You can eat outside, downstairs inside or upstairs inside. We ate outside on a wonder warm day and really enjoyed. If you want to eat indoors I would recommend upstairs which is very beautiful.
We had very delicious fresh spring rolls and Pho.
We also had wonderful desserts – apple crisp with ice cream and ice cream with pastry puffs and chocolate sauce. They also have great iced coffee.

Kangaroo Café
Has ‘western size’ big meals. We found it difficult to get through after eating smaller light meals often. Still, good food and offers western dishes if you’re feeling deprived. We booked our tours here.

Lam Cafe
Nguyen Huu Huan Street
Also good (and very Vietnamese), try G7 and any other Trung Nguyen cafe.

Little Ha Noi

Another good restaurant is "Little Ha Noi", not by the lake but the small and quiet one in the old street area. I don't remember the name of that small street but you can go around Luong Ngoc Quyen, Ta Hien or Ma May street to find it; or ask people and they'll show you.
  Good Vietnamese food there.

R+R Tavern 47 Lo Su Street, Ha Noi
Met the wonderful couple who runs the place, made me feel at home. I got myself really good tex-mex food (if you can imagine this in VietNam!) while listening to a killer rock and roll band covering everything from Dire Straits to Pink Floyd.
Some folks from the crowd even took the mike and sang lead. Great time.

Sofitel Metropole Hotel Sunday Seafood Buffet
15 Ngo Quyen
This was our last big splurge before heading home.
The cost is steep at USD$25 a person ++. However, if you like seafood and can afford it go. I think you will agree that this is a serious bargain.
The seafood is absolutely delicious. Also the service is wonderful and they have wonderful live jazz music.

Tamarind Café
80 Ma May, Old Quarter, Ha Noi
Home of Handspan Travel which used for 3 trips and highly recommend. Tamarind Café – pretty expensive for what you get – priced in US Dollars (illegal) not Dong.
The food is very good so look at the menu before ordering and decide whether you willing to pay there prices.
