I just did this last month. First, I took an overnight train from Guangzhou to NanNing. The train left at 16:00 and
arrived at 5:30 AM the next day. The cost was RMB/YUAN646. Then, I took the train from NanNing to PingXiang. The train
left at 07:58H, and arrived at PingXiang at 12:30H.
There were many tuk-tuk drivers and trucks waiting to take
us to the border. We paid RMB/YUAN247. Once at the border, it took us about 2 hours to get through customs and
immigration for both China and VietNam.
We paid about USD$8 for a ride to Lang Son. I think I paid too much for
this. They took us to a minibus where others were getting ready to leave for Ha Noi. The minibus ride was USD$3 pp for
the 3 hour ride to Ha Noi. They also dropped us off at our hotel.
You should plan your trip so that you arrive
at the VietNam border before 16:30H. I was told that they do not stamp foreign passports after that.
Although the
journey took us about 22 hours from start to finish, we saved a bundle. One way airfare from HongKong to Ha Noi or HCMC
was USD$300.
